Not gonna lie. I’m a little biased when it comes to KPOP, and I tend to listen to mostly male groups and singers. So as you can imagine it was rather difficult to trim this list down to my absolute favorites of 2015. I also did my best to try and not include any repeat songs that Cheryl mentioned in her top male KPOP singles of 2015 in last week’s KPOPmaps.
GOT7 “딱 좋아 (Just Right)” July
I have to confess. I kind of hated this song upon first listen, but damnit if GOT7 aren’t charming as hell. I specifically remember tweeting out that I didn’t like it but that it’d probably become my favorite after a couple more listens. I know myself so well.
SHINee “Married to the Music” August
It’s no secret that I enjoy horror and other spooky things (which I’ve begun to channel in to MOREspooker posts) so the concept for SHINee’s repackaged album was right up my alley. Don’t joke, I had this on repeat for months. It was my go to upbeat walking-to-the-train-station song. 10 out of 10 would put a hop in my step every time.
Junho (of 2PM) “SO GOOD” September
Junho’s been doing solo work in Japan for a couple years, but y’all have NO idea how thrilled I was to discover that Junho was releasing a solo album in KOREA. While “Fire” was the title song off his “One” album, there’s something about about “SO GOOD” (originally a Japanese single of the same name) and it’s excessive cheese factor that won me over more. It also low key reminds me of U-KISS’ “Party All The Time” level of ridiculous.
VIXX LR “Beautiful Liar” August
I’m a HUGE fan of VIXX but their 2015 singles were a little lackluster compared to the impact of “Error” or even “Eternity” in 2014. Luckily their first subunit comprised of Leo and Ravi debuted as VIXX LR and I couldn’t have been more pleased. It’s moody, beautifully shot and that chorus cuts in to your heart with all the emotions.
EXO “Call Me Baby” March
Oh, EXO. How do you keep coming back with such catchy title tracks? No seriously. My friends and would play both the Korean version and Mandarin versions back to back in the car. Repeatedly. And while this is the last song that Tao promoted with the boys he definitely went out with a bang.
Lee Hong Gi “눈치없이 (INSENSIBLE)” November
I adore FTISLAND. Soooo a Hong Gi solo debut? Yes please! I also have a super guilty pleasure much like any You’re Beautiful fan of seeing Hong Gi and Park Shin Hye reunited on screen again. Don’t mind me while I gush over their friendship.
BEAST “예이 (YeY)” July
I’m really enjoying BEAST’s trend of releasing summer singles. Lets keep that going! The colors are bright, the atmosphere is fun and a little gratuitous skin flashing brought to you by Kikwang is always welcomed. While the chorus could be a stronger that didn’t stop me from attempting to sing along every time it came on shuffle. Side note: 2015 seemed to be the year of Teri’s favs getting solos including Dongwoon debuting in Japan with キミしか (Kimishika).
