Our Top Tech Events (and stuff) of 2015 – Part 1

Happy December! This means we’re bringing back end of year Top 10 lists! This one is about top tech events that happened this year. Some good, some bad, some that definitely had an effect in the industry. Now, in no particular order, here’s part 1 of our Top Tech Events of 2015 –

  • Jay Z launches Tidal with a bunch of famous people and his wife – I haven’t subscribed to a streaming service yet, it’s not that I don’t want to, I just have very basic listening habits. I’ll be honest, the marketing of Tidal just didn’t win me over. I sort of got what they were trying to do or at least I thought they were going to that high end niche. The thing is, that is pretty hard to do when you don’t necessarily bring anything new to the plate.
  • Apple finally releases the Apple Watch – After delays and hints and well, stuff, Apple releases a watch. It’s kind of cool, I guess. I don’t own one. Half the people I know that bought them, don’t use them anymore. I wouldn’t dismiss its use just yet. I just don’t think the hype is there.
  • The Zuckerbergs welcome a baby – using Facebook’s Notes, Mark Zuckerberg pens a lovely message of hope and the future to him and Priscilla’s little girl, Max. He even announces the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative. It’s not every day you should care about a Silicon Valley baby, but maybe it is time you do and all that the Chan Zuckerbergs want to grow with her.
  • Amazon opens a store with books, Kindles and no cafe – Amazon toyed with pop up shops, but they managed to open their own brick and mortar place. There are no prices. There’s free wifi. They encourage you to look things up. It’s like a library and online store had a baby. Will this expand? No idea, but you have to hand it to Amazon for making it cool to hang out with a bunch of books again.
  • HBO Now is introduced for those who don’t want cable, but need their GoT fix – Let’s face it, there’s only so many times you can beg your friends for their HBO GO accounts. I’ve been there saying I’d use it just a few times and then I marathoned a bunch of movies. Suddenly a few days later the password is changed. I changed. It was a cold dark winter… But not anymore! HBO Now let’s me live on!
