Creepy KPOP: Fun But Deadly

marriedtothemusicTis the season to indulge in all things creepy as Halloween fast approaches. To compliment our new column MoreSpooker, we’ve compiled a list of some of our favorite Halloween themed or just plain creepy KPOP music videos!

It’s no secret that a majority of KPOP themes tend to lean towards the cute or sexy vs the dark side of the spectrum, but when they do the results can be really fun and creative. Now not all of these videos are necessarily scary but they definitely celebrate a darker or twisted side in the world of KPOP concepts whether it be through the storyline, visuals, choreography or just the song itself. Lets take a trip shall we?

Shinhwa “Wild Eyes”
Kicking it off with a classic KPOP song from the early 2000’s. The song itself isn’t very eery but the graphics are definitely not the usual concept for boy groups back in the day. Most of the video filled folding chair choreography and close up solo shots. However it’s the cut scenes of the guys peeling off their faces and CGI effects of their skin tearing to reveal monster like features, that give the video it’s creepy stamp of approval.

VIXX “저주인형 (Voodoo Doll)”
Now here’s a group that started out with some pretty light hearted comebacks but around the beginning of 2013 there was a definite shift in their marketing. By November 2013, VIXX had nearly perfected the dark concept with Voodoll Doll to the point that they had to release a clean version of the music video, and change the original choreography because it was deemed too “violent” for broadcast. The pacing of the song, the makeup, the storyline, the effects, the acting and even the choreography create an overall disturbed feeling. Definitely a favorite for my horror loving soul.

Block B “Jackpot”
While the isn’t overwhelmingly disturbing as VIXX’s Voodoo Doll, Block B bring the general creepiness of the circus and clowns to the forefront. Despite it’s highly saturated and fun visuals there’s still a sense of unease as this girl gets entangled in a twisted carnival version of Alice in Wonderland.

Lyn & Leo “꽃잎놀이 (Blossom Tears)”
Best way to describe this song and video is hauntingly beautiful. Lyn & Leo of VIXX’s vocal pair beautifully together for starts off as a seemingly innocent tale of love and heartbreak. But as it develops past the first chorus, everything begins to feel off until emotions come to a head and the story unravels revealing the boyfriend’s true demented colors. Spot on!

SHINee “Married To The Music”
This is potentially my favorite song of 2015. The teasers leading up to this comeback had a Rocky Horror Picture show and the song itself is insanely catchy. How do they top it off? Lets throw SHINee’s in to house party where they gradually keep losing body parts that felt like something out of the Addam’s Family films! Super fun, super colorful, super cheesy! It’s pretty much the 90’s horror comedy of KPOP. Can we have a Married To The Music Halloween theme party??

Even though Run wasn’t a title track for MBLAQ those campy sound effects strewn about throughout the song coupled with the booming bass that make this a fun Ninja themed song. Not to mention the boys are practically chatting that “You better run, run. Run, run. Baaaaad booooys.”
