KPOP goes through waves of when boy and girl groups go out and it seems we’re in the girl group cycle. It can get pretty repetitive, but no fear, SM Entertainment‘s newest girl group is back! Red Velvet just released the title song, “Dumb Dumb” and it is as infectious as it gets.
Of course there are the obvious comparisons with the girl groups within the company, but even so, Red Velvet is still a little different. Make no mistake, they are definitely SM. The marketing is super slick. The styling is practically flawless. It all better be if you’re going to forgive a few things like the odd Michael Jackson break in the song and regurgitating school girl outfits which seem to be a requirement in promotions (though the Red Velvet ones were nice).
Their 1st full album, The Red is now available for you to put on repeat like I have for the last few days. I love “Day 1” as it reminds me of happy 90s euro pop music like The Cardigans. Actually the whole album is pop music bliss, so I won’t go further into it.
Admittedly I didn’t expect much from Red Velvet. I saw them live at KCON 2015 Los Angeles and I was impressed for the most part. I’m still a bit perturbed that Wendy (the lead vocalist) joined Zion.T for his gorgeous song “Yanghwa BRDG (양화대교)” and their ranges didn’t fit each other at all. I’ll blame it on nerves for now. As a girl group, I do like them and it’s nice to see them slowly build their personas. “Dumb Dumb” is certainly a big step in that direction.
