Here are my TOP7 Favorite Korean Dramas of 2014! I did a Friday5 Pros/Cons review about a half year ago and I have found the second half not to be as good as the first. Still, there have been some shows that wiggled their way into my all time top 10, which hasn’t happened in a while. Here are trailers or scenes of the shows with a brief reason to why I loved them.
Now, in no particular order, my TOP7!
You Who Came from the Stars [SBS] – Genre: Romance, comedy, fantasy, melodrama, thriller
Episodes: 21 / Broadcast period: 2013-Dec-18 to 2014-Feb-27
I absolutely love how an unlikely pairing make insane chemistry and works. Jun Ji Heon and Kim So Hyun play an actress and an alien that fall in love… AND YOU BELIEVE IN IT.
Cry factor: 8/10 tissues
It’s Okay, That’s Love [SBS] – Genre: Romance, medical, melodrama, comedy
Episodes: 16 / Broadcast period: 2014-Jul-23 to 2014-Sep-11
WOW. This drama took mental illness head on and expressed it in a way that was sensitive and powerful. Pain and love grow in ways that sometimes you just don’t expect, nor can fully understand.
Cry factor: 9/10
Secret Love Affair [JTBC] – Genre: Melodrama, romance, musical
Episodes: 16 / Broadcast period: 2014-Mar-17 to 2014-May-13
The slow burn of a May/December romance coupled with cunning politics and strife elitism gives, what I think, one of the best melodramatic romances of the year. The age difference is a factor. The affair is a factor. It all paled in comparison to the love of music and the blooming of lovers.
Cry factor: 3/10
A Witch’s Love [tvN] – Genre: Romance, comedy
Episodes: 16 / Broadcast period: 2014-Apr-14 to 2014-Jun-10
This drama came at the right time as I was drowning in melos. Another May/December romance, but light and fun. Also, Uhm Jung Hwa! She’s one of my favorites and Park Seo Joon stepped easily into the role that Taiwanese actor Ethan Ruan made famous.
Cry factor: 1/10
I Need Romance 3 [tvN] – Genre: Romance, comedy
Episodes: 16 / Broadcast period: 2014-Jan-13 to 2014-Mar-04
Sung Joon had dabbled in lead roles, but this character was sexy, cool, logical and knew what he wanted. Kim So Yeon was also very relatable to me. Career woman who had to figure her shit out when everything falls apart. I think with all that, it made this the best and most independent of the I Need Romance series.
Cry factor: 3/10
Pride & Prejudice [MBC] – Genre: Drama, human, legal, romance
Episodes: 20 / Broadcast period: 2014-Oct-27 to 2015-Jan-06
Honestly, this drama has dragged a bit from its original premise, but 5urprise’s Lee Taehwan and Choi Jin Hyuk have a great bromance and the ensemble cast is likable and good. I love the idea of a prosecutor office fighting for the greater good when they just have each other to lean on.
Cry factor: 5/10
Modern Farmer [SBS] – Genre: Romance, comedy, human, family
Episodes: 20 / Broadcast period: 2014-Oct-18 to 2014-Dec-27
Sweet and, at times, really silly. We had Honey Lee playing a role I never imagined she’s do. Lee Hongki was great, but his bandmates: Park Min Woo, Lee Shi Un and fellow FNCer Kwok Dong Yun were absolute scene stealers.
Cry factor: 1/10
That’s it! Nope! Here are some honorable good and bad mentions!
20s [tvN] – Genre: Romance
Episodes: 4 / Broadcast period: 2014-Jan-06 to 2014-Jan-07
An idol – Kikwang from Beast – and an old love get back together. It’s young love in a satisfying mini drama.
Bride of the Century [TV Chosun] – Genre: Romance, fantasy, melodrama, family
Episodes: 16 / Broadcast period: 2014-Feb-22 to 2014-Apr-12
Lee Hongki’s first role of the year was MADE for him. Drama is a bit weak in parts, but he was so great.
The Greatest Marriage [TV Chosun] – Genre: Romance, drama, comedy
Episodes: 16 / Broadcast period: 2014-Sep-27 to 2014-Dec
You should only watch this alone if you hate yourself or with friends if you like talking shit. And there you go.
Birth of a Beauty [SBS] – Genre: Romance, comedy
Episodes: 20 / Broadcast period: 2014-Nov-01 to 2015-Jan
Started off cute and now I’m just not sure. It feels tired. I watched for the cast… and that wasn’t enough.
There’s my TOP7 Korean Dramas of the year and some mentions. I cry fairly easy, so the cry factor is all relative. For the most part, I found myself rewatching scenes, discussing them with friends and just really enjoying them. What are your favorites? Which ones didn’t you like? Let me know in the comments or through our SNS.
