SmackSoft is a Korean rock band that debuted in the early 2000’s and continue to be one of Korea’s most widely recognized for their hybrid sound of post-punk, rock, and electronica music. Hot off the heels of their show at this year’s SXSW in Texas, and just in time for their Seoulsonic/CAAMFest show, SmackSoft’s head woman Bo Ryung Whang 황보령 (Vocal/Guitar) took the time to do a short interview with us!
KandyKandy: What bands are you influenced by?
SmackSoft: There are too many to list, but definitely Velvet Underground and Sonic Youth.
KandyKandy: You performed at SXSW this year, what was your favorite experience during your stay in Austin?
SmackSoft: The people – we met so many amazing people at our official showcase and while we were hanging out in the city during the festival. We’d love the chance to play at SXSW again in the future.
KandyKandy: Are there any differences audiences from in US and in Korea or other countries that you’ve noticed?
SmackSoft: Korean audiences tend to be more restrained in the beginning, but American audiences are always ready to party. I love their spirit and emotion! But all the audiences we’ve played for in both countries have all been awesome. We’re grateful to anyone who takes the time to come see up play.
KandyKandy: You toured Mexico and the US in 2012, what are you looking forward to when you come to perform in San Francisco?
SmackSoft: We’re looking forward to sharing our music with a new audience and getting to hang out and meet people afterward. It’s always exciting getting to playing in a new place and for new listeners.
KandyKandy: For those who aren’t familiar with your music, what song(s) or album(s) would you recommend new listeners to check out?
SmackSoft: From our fourth album, Mana Wind, I recommend the song “Horizon.” And from our 2012 Follow Your Heart album, I recommend “It Is You & Me.”
KandyKandy: Is there an artist or group you’d like to collaborate with in the future?
SmackSoft: Sure! We’d love the chance to work with artists like David Bowie, Brian Eno, Bjork, or Daft Punk.
KandyKandy: Who is the best drinker in the group? Who is the worst?
SmackSoft: I think we’re all pretty good drinkers, but our bassist is probably the worst drinker of all us. Our guitarist, Rainbow99 gets really funny when he drinks.
Thank you so much to SmackSoft for taking time from their hectic schedule to answer our questions!
SmackSoft will be playing along side Glen Check, Love X Stereo, Rock ‘N’ Roll Radio, and IDIOTAPE in San Francisco Thursday March 20th at the Brick and Mortar Music Hall as a part of Seoulsonic and CAAMFest!
